Opened in 1957, Victoria Park is the largest public park on Hong Kong Island. It occupies an area of 19 hectares and was named after the statue of Queen Victoria, which is located at the main entrance of the park on Causeway Road. It is strategically located in Causeway Bay and if you are in the area, you can easily find it.
Many people, especially local workers, spend their leisure time at the park. This is because of the attractive sites and other facilities of the area, which include the statue of Queen Victoria, located at the main gate of the park, bandstand, central lawn and walking trail. Also, there are a large number of sports facilities, such as 2 lawn bowl green, 14 tennis courts, swimming pool complex, 600-meter trail, soccer pitches, basketball courts and children playgrounds. Tennis is the most adored game and many people gather at the park to enjoy international competitions such as Hong Kong Open and Hong Kong Classic.
Besides, there are many events which take place at Victoria Park on yearly basis, including Lunar New Year fair and Hong Kong flower show.
Festival and Activities
Its advantageous location and convenient transportation makes it the most appropriate place to hold large-scale outdoor exhibitions in Hong Kong. Every year, the Lunar New Year flower market and the Hong Kong Flower Show are held in Victoria Park. More and more local people and tourists like to have a special Chinese New Year in Hong Kong and enjoy the festival atmosphere. Especially, the Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo held before Christmas is a popular fair with many specialities.
The Victoria Park also plays an important role during the Mid-Autumn Festival (the 15th day of the eighth lunar month). The central lawn of the park provides a big open-air area for entertainment. Every year, thousands of visitors and citizens come here to eat moon cakes and enjoy lanterns under the full moon. In addition, visitors can see the wonderful lantern party and colourful fireworks on this day.
The City Forum, a distinctive feature of Victoria Park, is held every Sunday. This forum is also a live show of Radio Television Hong Kong. It is just like the forum in Hyde Park of London, which is the embodiment of democracy and freedom. Politicians, famous public figures and ordinary people from all over the world come together and express their ideas and opinions. The topics of the speeches are mainly related to current issues. If visitors are still in Hong Kong on a Sunday, it is a good opportunity to join the City Forum and enjoy the clash of ideas from different cultures and social backgrounds.
